Performance Criteria

The Scheme aims to assess the overall quality of diagnostic analysis performed by a laboratory by a combination of retrospective audit and distribution of reference material or web-based EQA. It assesses tissue specific performance for Constitutional cases and for Oncology cases (acquired abnormalities).

UK NEQAS is a fully interpretative EQA scheme.

Performance criteria have been divided into three broad inter-linked categories:

  1. Technical performance: 
    Slide quality. The banding quality of submitted slides is assessed.
  2. Analytical performance:
    Scoring of the quality of individual laboratory analyses and description of ISCN
  3. Interpretative performance:
    Scoring of the quality of individual laboratory reports. 

UK laboratories will be given a score against these criteria under NQAAP-determined performance standards Non-UK laboratories are also scored against these criteria and any poor performance is referred to the Steering Group.

EQA may involve external audit of cases, online assessment, case scenarios or sample distribution. For more information see 'EQA timetable'.

Haemato-Oncology Scheme

There is one set of performance criteria for Haematology and Oncology Cytogenetics.

Haemato-Oncology Performance Criteria

The Haemato-Oncology Performance Criteria have been updated (Oct 2009). These criteria are produced by the Steering Committee and agreed by NQAAP (National Quality Assurance Advisory Panel). These criteria are used to mark EQA assessments. They will be used in all EQA assessments from 2009 onwards.

The Molecular Rapid Aneuploidy (MRA) Performance Criteria

The MRA (Molecular Rapid Aneuploidy) Performance Criteria have been updated (Oct 2010). These criteria are produced by the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Steering Committees and agreed by Genetics NQAAP (National Quality Assurance Advisory Panel). These criteria are used to mark EQA assessments. They will be used in all EQA assessments from 2009 onwards.
